Rock climbing

Did you know Melbourne is the epicentre for high-altitude action and adventure? It starts with Grampians National Park, which is home to hundreds of spectacular climbs, highlighted by the knife-edged cliff faces of Mount Stapylton. Agreeable weather conditions and an awe-inspiring collection of cliffs, crags and bluffs sets Mt. Arapiles at the pinnacle of climbing and abseiling destinations in Australia. Choose from more than 2,000 climbs, spanning from easygoing beginners ascents to some of most extreme climbs on the continent.

State Hockey & Netball Centre

This multipurpose 3,500-seat sporting facility houses two outdoor hockey fields and four outdoor and five indoor netball courts. It’s where you can catch the Melbourne Vixens netball team, the Melbourne Tigers National Basketball League team and the Australian Hockey League’s Victorian Vikings in action.

Equilibrium Health & Fitness Club

Feeling guilty about breaking your workout routine? Tired of watching everyone else have all the fun? This state-of-the-art health club is free for all Mercure North Melbourne guests. Get in a quick weight or cardio session, sign up for a Yoga or body pump class or go all out and book a one-on-one session with a professional personal trainer. Etihad Stadium

If you’ve seen an Australian sporting event on television, odds are it was played here. The stadium hosts Australian Football League (AFL) games – also known as Aussie Rules – in the winter months from March to September, and is a physical marvel in its own sense with an enormous computer-controlled retractable roof and a lush green carpet of turf.  The Roman amphitheatre-style design puts you right on top of the action, creating an atmosphere that is legendary among Australian sporting fans.

North Melbourne Football Club

More commonly known as “The Kangaroos,” they are the fourth oldest Australian rules football club in the AFL and one of the oldest sporting clubs in the world. The club is also unofficially known as "The Shinboners", a term which dates back to its 19th-century slaughterhouse worker origins. Their motto is Victoria amat curam, Latin for "Victory Demands Dedication," and they play like it to the very last man. We can guarantee this: See them play once and you’ll be a Shinboner fan for life!
